face crumpled.
Leo didn’t understand the investigation, the missing money, or the frightened adults surrounding him.
He simply touched Evelyn’s cheek.
“Don’t go again.”
Evelyn kissed his forehead.
“I’m not leaving you.”
Celeste suddenly reached for her handbag.
Adrian stepped between her and the table.
“Don’t.”
“My phone is inside.”
“Leave it there.”
Evelyn watched Celeste’s eyes flick toward the hallway leading to the study.
A terrible realization struck her.
“Adrian, don’t let her reach the safe.”
Celeste ran.
Guests scattered as Adrian chased her from the ballroom.
Two security officers followed.
By the time they reached the study, Celeste had pulled Adrian’s father’s portrait away from the wall and opened the concealed panel.
“How do you know the combination?” Adrian demanded.
Celeste stopped.
That question alone destroyed another part of her story.
She had spent months helping Adrian reorganize the house after Evelyn disappeared.
At some point, she had discovered the safe.
Inside were several envelopes and a flash drive.
Celeste snatched a stack of papers.
Adrian grabbed her wrist before she could reach the fireplace.
“Give them to me.”
“You don’t understand what she did,” Celeste said.
“Then explain it.”
A sheet slipped from Celeste’s hand.
Adrian picked it up.
It wasn’t one of the foundation audits.
It was a Westbridge Recovery Center payment receipt.
The payment had been made from Vaughn Strategic Consulting six weeks after Evelyn vanished.
Celeste’s signature appeared at the bottom.
Adrian looked at her as if he had never seen her before.
“You knew Evelyn was alive.”
Celeste’s composure finally fractured.
“I knew someone matching her description had been found.”
“You paid for her care.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“By letting me believe my wife was dead?”
“You were destroyed!” Celeste shouted.
“Leo was barely sleeping.
The company was collapsing around you.
She couldn’t even remember who she was.
What was I supposed to do? Bring her home and let her destroy all of you again?”
Evelyn entered the study.
Behind her came Daniel Price and Detective Lena Ortiz, who had been waiting in a vehicle near the estate after Evelyn signaled that the situation had changed.
Ortiz did not theatrically arrest Celeste on Evelyn’s accusation alone.
She calmly identified herself and told everyone not to touch the contents of the safe.
“Ms.
Vaughn,” she said, “we already have warrants connected to financial records from three consulting entities.
I strongly suggest you stop handling potential evidence.”
Celeste went pale.
That investigation had begun independently after a bank compliance review flagged a series of transfers involving one of the foundation vendors.
Evelyn’s recovered records connected those transfers directly to invoices Celeste had approved.
Daniel photographed the safe before anything else was moved.
Inside they found the original audit Evelyn had prepared before the crash, copies of suspicious invoices, and handwritten notes documenting the dates she confronted Celeste about discrepancies.
There was something else.
An envelope addressed to Adrian.
Evelyn had written it the afternoon before the crash.
Adrian recognized her handwriting immediately.
His hands shook as he opened it.
The letter was short.
Evelyn had written that she suspected Celeste of stealing from the foundation.
She warned Adrian not to confront anyone until the outside accountant reviewed the records.
She also mentioned that Celeste had become increasingly angry and had accused Evelyn
