He Brought His Mistress Home While I Was Still Healing

She simply grabbed her champagne-colored case, walked out, and disappeared into a waiting car.

Daniel watched from the doorway.

Only after the car drove away did he understand that whatever future they had imagined together might already be collapsing.

Before leaving, he turned back toward me.

“You can’t keep Lily from me.”

“I haven’t said I will.”

“You’ll try.”

“I will protect her.

Those are not the same thing.”

He stared at me for a long moment.

Then his eyes dropped to the hospital gown beneath my robe.

“You’re still bleeding?”

The question was so absurdly late that Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes, Daniel.”

“Why didn’t you tell me it was still that bad?”

I almost could not believe him.

“I did.”

He said nothing.

The locksmith changed the locks before 9 p.m.

At 9:17, Rachel refused to leave until I called my obstetrician’s emergency line.

My doctor listened to my symptoms and told me to go to the hospital.

I resisted.

Then I stood from the kitchen chair and nearly fainted.

Rachel caught Lily while Marcus caught me.

By 10:04, I was in the emergency department.

An ultrasound showed retained placental tissue and significant anemia.

The doctor explained that the bleeding should never have continued that heavily for twelve weeks.

I needed a procedure the following morning.

Lying in the hospital bed with an IV in my arm, I felt a shame I had not expected.

I had spent weeks telling myself that pain was normal because childbirth was hard.

I had accepted Daniel’s growing distance because I thought he was stressed.

I had lowered every standard for how I deserved to be treated because I was too tired to fight.

At 2:06 a.m., Rachel sat beside the bed while Lily slept in the bassinet the hospital provided.

“There is one more thing,” she said.

I knew from her tone it was not good.

The forensic accountant had completed a preliminary review.

Vanessa had not acted alone.

At least two transfers bore Daniel’s digital approval.

I stared at Rachel.

“You said he looked surprised.”

“He probably didn’t know about every transaction.

That doesn’t mean he knew about none of them.”

The next afternoon, after my procedure, Daniel called seventeen times.

I answered once.

“Are you in the hospital?” he demanded.

“Yes.”

His voice softened.

“Mara, I didn’t know you were that sick.”

“You saw me bleeding through my clothes last week.”

Silence.

“Can I see Lily?”

“Through counsel.”

“You’re really doing this?”

“You started it.”

Then I asked him a question.

“Did you approve VCL’s invoices?”

The silence lasted too long.

“Daniel?”

“Vanessa told me they were legitimate subcontracting expenses.”

There it was.

He had approved them.

Maybe he had not known where all the money went, but he had bypassed normal review because he trusted the woman he was sleeping with.

His betrayal had damaged more than our marriage.

It threatened employees, investors, and clients who had no idea nearly a million dollars had been slipping through false invoices.

The board suspended Daniel pending investigation that evening.

Vanessa was terminated two days later after refusing to surrender her company laptop.

The company reported the suspected fraud to its outside counsel and insurers.

Rachel advised me not to interfere beyond preserving evidence and exercising the rights already held by
